Pi Day

The annual Pi Day treasure trail took place in the Maths Department on Friday 14 March.

The annual Pi Day treasure trail took place on Friday 14 March.  44 students from Years 11-13 successfully completed the whole trail this year and should be commended.  There were biscuits and apple pi on offer for winning entrants.  The Year 13 Further Maths team was the first group to complete the entire treasure trail.  There was a real buzz around the Department, and much fun was had by all.

This year the encoded message was "deficient, evil, odd and powerful", which may be taken as a commentary on current affairs, but is actually a description of the number 2025 using mathematical properties.  2025 is deficient because the sum of its factors not including itself is less than 2025. 2025 is evil because it has an even number of 1s in its binary expansion.  As it is not a multiple of 2 it is odd.  2025 is a powerful number because for every prime factor it has, the square of that prime number is also a factor of 2025.
