Course Overview

Beyond the tremendous benefits in the development and improvement of your ability to think, reason and argue, this course gives you wonderful insight into modern Europe at a time when both are finding their way in a new world.

On this course students rationally investigate the human past.  They make sense of cause and consequence, continuity and change, and organise and interrogate the evidence.

You will have the opportunity to visit universities and attend lectures as well as more distant field trips.

OSH has a wonderfully well-stocked library which supports your further interests and research outside of the classroom.

The course consists of four modules:

Module 1 Britain, 1377-1455: A study of kings, this study incorporates psychological profiles, as well as religious, military and political history.  The inspiration behind GRR Martin’s Game of Thrones, this relevantly unheard of topic will give you a greater appreciation of the medieval world.

Module 2 Democracy and Dictatorships in Germany 1919–1963: A chronological study of Germany from 1919 to 1963, which will consider the rise and fall of both the Weimar Republics and the Third Reich, before looking at the establishment of a communist East German state.

Module 3 Rulers of Russia 1855 – 1965: Were the Communists just Red Tsars?  How far did war create turbulent change in Russia?  Had the Communists made any significant economic change in Russia?
Case Studies: Alexander II’s reforms, the Provisional Government, Khrushchev’s Russia.

Module 4: Coursework essay Winston Churchill. 4,000 words and 12 months of prior research.
